Thousands of people from over the south east flocked to Faversham’s Millennium Market last Sunday, to celebrate 1,000 years of a market trading in Faversham.
Visitors enjoyed taking part in historical games and activities such as sitting in stocks; dressing up as medieval nobility; playing traditional games and having a go at calligraphy and illuminating.
There was plenty of entertainment from across the eras, including a jester, birds of prey plus ponies and donkeys to cuddle. The highlight of the day was the appearance of the Black Knight of Faversham, who paraded through the town with their entourage and bearing a standard featuring the three lions of Faversham.
The traders of Faversham Market were out in force selling a wide selection of fresh produce, artisan food and drink, as well as locally made arts and crafts.
Suzanne Whittaker, Faversham Market’s Manager, says: “The Market has been overwhelmed by the support of visitors and the local community as we all came together to mark a thousand years of this fabulous market, which was even mentioned in the Domesday Book.
“We are run by a co-operative of stallholders and local volunteers and we’re very proud to be custodians of Faversham Market. We hope it will be around to celebrate again in another 1,000 years.”
